Ruminations

October 24, 2013

Just wrapped up a regional meeting with fellow librarians, and I have an observation about librarians and their toes. Quite often these toes are being stepped on in the course of business, and as foundational as libraries are, this just does not make sense to me.

That is, libraries get and provide something that customers up and down the organization can put their hands (or minds) on. We provide the supporting information for the who, what, how, when, and why of any operation. Libraries and librarians have been around a while, and not all old ideas are bad, dinosaur-like, or should accept even a dignified death. See the executive summary at http://evcp.berkeley.edu/sites/default/files/FINAL_CFUCBL_report_10.16.13.pdf to see what I mean, and take heart. Libraries seem to have been doing the right things for the right reasons all along. Those are your toes; take care of them, mliswilltravel.
